Polka Dots and Plaid Pleats

Are you a pattern mixologist? I certainly was not… And always felt like combining two or more patterns together would scream: “Crime, crime, crime of fashion!”  I shied away from such “mishmash” for years. The rule was to pick one pattern and stick to solids that compliment it. Until one day the style rebel in me put two black and white patterns together and realized those agreed with each other quite well! BOY has it been fun breaking the one-pattern-rule since then?!

Today’s outfit is an embodiment of bold pattern mixing with a mild color moderation. I married a red and black polka dot cardi (similar here , here and here) with a black and white wool plaid Express skirt (similar here and here) and I feel confident they make sweet outfit music together! For a tad bit of balance to this new union, I bridged it with a lace-embellished, black, silk cami from Express (similar here and here), black Banana Republic pumps (similar here) and a black Banana Republic purse (similar here). And voilà!!

Not only is this outfit a combination of patterns it is also an intrepid amalgamation of fabrics–wool, silk,  rayon and leather–and a union of cool details–this skirt has a beautiful set of pleats in the back, the cami houses a lace embroidery and the leather bag is decorated with character iron studs!

So unleash the fashion adventurer in yourself and make your next fall outfit one to remember–this is the time of the year when the weather allows us to mix different materials, patterns and layers! Let us all be bold!

Love Always,
